Meet July Featured Artist Katie Risor:
This July, The Art Store is thrilled to feature local children's book author/illustrator Katie Risor as our Artist of the Month. Katie's whimsical, story-rich artwork captures the wonder of nature, friendship, and imagination, inviting viewers into worlds that feel both magical and familiar. She is the author of the beloved Welcome to The Forest: The Harvest Party, as well her new release Welcome to the Forest: The Lake Trip. Both Available online, or locally at Parthenon Books!
Even better, Katie will be joining us live and in person twice during the month of July for special appearances at The Art Store. These events will give visitors a chance to meet the artist, learn about her creative process, and experience her work up close.
Originally from San Antonio, Katie credits much of her artistic inspiration to the landscapes and experiences of her childhood. The natural beauty of Central Texas, its unique quality of light, and countless hours spent outdoors with friends continue to influence her illustrations today.
“I spent a lot of time running around outside as a kid, and that feeling of just hanging out, outside with your friends is a big influence on my work.”
Katie's artistic influences span generations and mediums. She draws inspiration from beloved creators such as Hayao Miyazaki, Tove Jansson, Jim Henson, Mary Blair, Eyvind Earle, and Chris Sanders, while also admiring contemporary illustrators and storytellers including Matthew Forsythe, Rebecca Green, and James Gurney.
When it comes to materials, Katie has a clear favorite: gouache! The versatile paint medium allows her to create the rich colors and inviting textures that have become hallmarks of her illustrations.
Nature, friendships, everyday experiences, and what she describes as a “hyperactive imagination” all contribute to her creative process. Interestingly, Katie prefers working at night.
“When the weather is nice out during the day it's harder for me to focus because I feel like I should just be out there instead.”
For Katie, creativity often flourishes after traveling or spending time with fellow authors and illustrators. Connecting with other creative people leaves her energized and inspired to return to her own projects.
At the heart of Katie's work is a deep belief in the power of storytelling and art. She sees art as an essential part of the human experience.
“Art is a mirror for people to see themselves in, to process their lives and learn how to live.”
That philosophy also drives her motivation to create. Whether inspired by something another artist has made or by a story she wants to tell, Katie finds satisfaction in transforming ideas into reality.
“It's satisfying to create something out of nothing, having an idea and making it real. Sometimes, I have something to say or something to process through story. I think story is the most important thing for humans.”
Like many artists, Katie tailors her creative environment to the task at hand. When writing or planning compositions, she relies on upbeat music—often including video game boss battle soundtracks—to help her focus. During painting sessions, she may switch between music, audiobooks, YouTube videos, or favorite shows.
When asked how she developed her artistic skills, her answer was refreshingly simple:
“Practice.”
It's advice that aligns perfectly with what she believes every artist should hear:
“You need to untether your creativity from your ego. Art is like sports. You show up to practice, and you try, and you will improve. You don't go to the gym and pick up the 100-pound barbell right away. You have to build up your muscles first.”
We invite you to stop by The Art Store throughout July to enjoy Katie Risor's work and join us for her special in-person appearances. Whether you're an aspiring illustrator, a lover of children's books, or simply someone who appreciates imaginative storytelling, Katie's artwork offers a wonderful reminder of the creativity, curiosity, and connection that art brings to our lives.
