Watercolor Month Tip: Take Care of Your Brushes Like a Pro!

Happy Watercolor Month, Studio Society!

July is all about flowing color, luminous washes, and fresh inspiration. But let’s not forget one of the most important tools in your watercolor kit: your brushes! Whether you’re working with da VinciPrincetonSilver Brush Ltd., or another favorite, taking proper care of your brushes ensures they last longer, perform better, and stay ready for every new creative wave.

This week, we’re focusing on brush care essentials—because the right soap makes all the difference!

Mona Lisa Pink Soap
A cult favorite for a reason. This all-in-one cleaner and conditioner is gentle yet powerful. It removes pigment, oils, and buildup while keeping natural and synthetic hairs supple and soft. Bonus: it smells great (Hello, Almond Flavor!) and has a satisfying texture that’s easy to work into the bristles.

Jack Richeson Studio Linseed Soap
Made with natural linseed oil, this soap is biodegradable and non-toxic. It's especially great for deep-cleaning brushes after long painting sessions. It conditions as it cleans, making it ideal for artists who use their brushes daily.

da Vinci Vegan Brush Soap
Designed by the brush makers themselves, this soap is plant-based and made specifically for fine art brushes. It’s a must-have for maintaining your da Vinci brushes—especially if you’re taking advantage of our Colineo Brush sale.

Brush Care 101
Here are a few quick tips to keep your brushes in top shape:

  • Rinse Immediately: Never let paint dry in the bristles—especially with watercolor pigments that can cake near the ferrule.
  • Lather & Gently Swirl: Use a small amount of your chosen soap and work it through the bristles with your fingers or in the palm of your hand. Swirl gently—never scrub.
