Exploring Texture, Transparency, and Blooming Possibilities!

Spring has finally arrived in Central New York—albeit under a canopy of rainy skies and muddy sidewalks. Still, the magnolias are beginning to bloom, tulips are pushing through, and even the grayest days feel just a little brighter with the season’s first flashes of color. At The Art Store, we’re embracing all things floral for the month of May, and this week we’re highlighting one of the most versatile mediums in your studio: Acrylics!

Acrylic paints offer both flexibility and boldness, perfect for capturing the vibrant, ever-shifting beauty of spring flowers. While we’ve already danced through the delicate layers of watercolor and luxuriated in the richness of oils, now it’s time to celebrate heavy body acrylics, acrylic inks, and beyond—because nothing says “spring awakening” like a fresh palette and a few new techniques!

A Perfect Pairing: Heavy Body Acrylics + Acrylic Inks

Let’s start with texture. Heavy body acrylics, such as Holbein Heavy Body, offer luscious, sculptural strokes that allow you to carve out every petal and leaf with intentionality. They hold brush and palette knife marks beautifully, making them ideal for building dimension into your work—think the curl of a peony or the velvety fold of a magnolia.

But for every thick petal, there's a graceful wash waiting in the wings. Enter FW Acrylic Inks by Daler-Rowney. These highly pigmented, fluid acrylics bring in the transparency and flow that allow you to layer color, create soft transitions, or add fine details with a dip pen or brush. When paired with heavier paints, acrylic inks can mimic the subtle translucency of petals backlit by spring sunlight—or at least, what we imagine that sunlight looks like behind the clouds of a Central New York Spring!

Expand Your Garden: High Flow and SoFlat

Feeling adventurous? Try integrating Golden High Flow Acrylics into your floral work for expressive linework, dripping textures, or airbrush effects. These paints move like ink but have the permanence and pigment load of traditional acrylics. They’re a fantastic way to add energy and spontaneity to your florals—because sometimes a daisy just needs a little drama.

On the flip side, Golden SoFlat acrylics offer an ultra-matte, velvety finish that contrasts beautifully with glossier mediums. Use them to lay down flat color fields that allow your heavier textures or transparent layers to shine. Playing with these contrasts—thick and thin, matte and gloss, opaque and transparent—can elevate your floral compositions from decorative to dynamic.

Don’t Forget: Classes Are in Bloom!

While we’re still mostly painting indoors thanks to our moody spring weather (it’s giving “studio season” energy), plein-air painting days are just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to brush up on your skills, explore new techniques, or just spend an afternoon immersed in color with fellow creatives. We offer classes for all levels, and our instructors are here to help you cultivate your artistic garden—no green thumb required!

So grab a canvas, gather your acrylics, and let your florals bloom boldly this spring. And if anyone asks—yes, florals are groundbreaking. Especially when you paint them your way.
