2026 Trend Forecast

As we close out another creative year and look ahead to 2026, one thing is clear: the art world is shifting with intention. Artists are thinking more deeply - not only about what they create, but how and why. Materials matter! Origins matter. And authenticity matters more than ever.
At The Art Store, we keep a close eye on what’s emerging, evolving, and enduring. This week, we’re excited to share our 2026 Trend Forecast, highlighting four movements we see shaping the future of art and artistry... both globally and right here in Syracuse!
Trend #1: Earth Tones Take Center Stage
Grounded. Timeless. Elemental.
Earth tones are becoming increasingly prevalent across fine art, illustration, design, and mixed media. Rich umbers, soft clays, mossy greens, weathered ochres, warm sands, and muted charcoals are replacing high-saturation brights in many studios.
This shift reflects a desire for calm, connection, and authenticity. Colors that feel lived-in and human. Earth tones invite slow looking and thoughtful mark-making, whether in drawing, painting, or journaling. Expect to see these palettes everywhere in 2026, from sketchbooks to gallery walls.
Eco-Conscious Materials
Artists are asking more questions about where their tools come from. And we are here for it!
One brand that continues to lead this movement is Faber-Castell, our featured eco-conscious brand. For generations, Count von Faber-Castell and the Faber-Castell family have demonstrated a deep commitment to responsible forestry. The forests on and surrounding the family estate are managed sustainably, with trees harvested only at the end of their natural life cycle and replanted to ensure long-term ecological balance.
Beyond Germany, Faber-Castell actively helps replenish forests around the world, planting more trees than are used in production. This closed-loop approach ensures that artists can enjoy exceptional pencils, pastels, and tools - knowing their materials are crafted with respect for the Earth.
For the record: Eco-conscious materials aren’t a just a trend. They’re the future!
Sustainability as a Core Value
Sustainability is no longer an afterthought. It’s a foundation.
Royal Talens, one of our most trusted and beloved vendors, exemplifies this shift. With the recent construction of a new, state-of-the-art factory and facility, Royal Talens has made clear their commitment to responsible manufacturing and long-term environmental stewardship.
From energy-efficient processes to thoughtful material sourcing, Royal Talens continues to make intentional choices that support a greener future- for artists and for our planet. Their belief is simple and powerful: caring for creativity means caring for the world we create in.
Niche Brands and Hidden Gems
In 2026, artists are moving away from the expected—and toward the exceptional.
At The Art Store, we pride ourselves on seeking out niche, harder-to-find brands that offer something truly special. These are the makers who obsess over details, materials, and craft—often working outside the mainstream spotlight.
We love giving these brands a home on our shelves so artists in Syracuse and Central New York can discover tools they might not otherwise encounter, including:
These brands remind us that artistry thrives when curiosity leads the way!
Looking Ahead: A Creative New Year
Earth tones. Eco-conscious materials. Sustainability. Niche brands.
Together, these four emerging trends point toward a more thoughtful, intentional way of creating...making them perfect inspiration for New Year’s creative resolutions! Whether it’s choosing better materials, exploring new palettes, or discovering a brand you’ve never tried before, 2026 is shaping up to be a year of "meaningful making."
And that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about next week!
Until then, thank you for being part of our Studio Society - where creativity, quality, and care always come together!
XOXOXOX,
Your Friendly Neighborhood Art Store
